Spring : To Sneeze and Smell Like Dirt

Spring time is here. This means sneezing and watery eyes for those allergic to pollen. J happens to be one of those unfortunate individuals who experiences adverse reaction to pollen. J and Benadryl are synonymous at this time of the year. Although Spring can be inconvenient to some, it can also signify a new beginning for others.

Spring is definitely a new beginning for flowers, vegetables, shrubs and anything flora related in temperate countries. Last year, J helped plant hydrangeas in the small plot of yard we have in front of the house. There were three of them and I wanted one in pink, blue and the other a mix of both colors. We were unsuccessful in growing blue hydrangeas as the soil pH level was not acidic enough. This year we bought organic sulfur to assist. As J loves gardening, he planted more flowers, two varieties of chili plants and herbs (rosemary, mint, sage, basil, lemon leaves).

This year we will continue with what we planted last year. Additionally, we added some indoor plants to our repertoire. On one of the shopping trips to Home Depot, I spotted some pretty orchids and bought two varieties. I also bought green tropical plants. On another trip, J spotted bright yellow orchids. We ended up buying it although space was limited. It was just too beautiful to pass.

The orchids and tropical plants are growing new buds and lush green leaves respectively. Amazing what ice cubes and water as well as TLC can do for plants.

I have not taken any pictures of the yard. However in a few months, the yard outside will have flowers, vegetable and herbs. I am definitely looking forward to taking photographs of the garden and posting them. Until then I leave you with this quote by John Greenleaf Whittier...

Give fools their gold, and knaves their power; let fortune's bubbles rise and fall; who sows a field, or trains a flower, or plants a tree, is more than all.
